The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal recently conducted an interview with Disturbed bassist John Moyer. Here is an excerpt from the interview:
“This is a Disturbed that you’ve never seen,” said Moyer about the metal band’s updated show. “We’re bringing out a level of production which is beyond anything we’ve done before. We’ve integrated videos in with the songs, a video look that goes with every song that paints a picture. Even if you have seats in the back, it’s still an amazing show.
“You’re not just watching four guys walk around on stage, you’re watching like this entire video montage that goes with the music and it helps support all of the lyrics and all of the crushing tones that we have going on. We always feel like we bring a great show, but this time around, we feel like this is the best show we’ve ever had.”
Moyer, who grew up in El Paso, is the most recent addition to the band. Moyer replaced Disturbed’s former bassist, Steve “Fuzz” Kmak.
While living in El Paso, Moyer rarely passed up an opportunity to go see the metal road shows that rolled into town. One of the concerts that influenced him the most was a performance by veteran spandex sensation Van Halen.
“There were a couple (concerts), but one of the most memorable ones was when I saw Van Halen when they came through on the 0U812 tour,” he said. “I don’t remember who the opening act was, but I was such a Van Halen fan at the time and I loved it. You know it was amazing. . . I remember Eddie coming over to the wings and being like where I could almost touch him, you know? We were reaching out to him and he was throwing picks at us. Yeah, it was very cool.”
Which leads to the next question; the question that has been plaguing metal fans for decades. Where do you stand, Moyer: Van Halen or Van Hagar?
“The better lead singer was Sammy Hagar,” he said with a laugh. “I mean David Lee Roth was a great front man, and I don’t want to take anything from him, but Sammy could just sing circles around the man.”
