Rob Halford discusses Judas Priest farewell tour.

Legendary Judas Priest lead singer Rob Halford gave a lengthy interview ti Italian outlet Musica Metal discussing among several topics the farewell tour, the departure of mainstay KK Downing and the future of the band. Here is an excerpt:

On what it feels like to be back playing with JUDAS PRIEST again after taking some time off in 2010:

Halford: "It always feels like it never ended. It feels like the metal has never stopped, which is a great feeling. When we're back in each other's company, and we turn the amps on and the songs start to be played, it's just magic — it's metal magic. And all the ingredients that make good metal are still very much in place — all the passion and the belief and the power of what we do in PRIEST as metal players. It's all good. And, of course, this is exciting because we're doing songs that we've never done before for this show. We're also doing some songs from a long, long time ago that we haven't played for many, many years. So the setlist is gonna be very unusual; it's very much a celebration of the life of PRIEST and music live on stage."

On the new JUDAS PRIEST guitarist, Richie Faulkner:

Halford: "We've been very, very lucky to find a guitar player like Richie, because he's a top man. He really loves metal, he loves PRIEST, and he's got all the parts [down], he knows everything, he knows exactly what he needs to do, and he learned a lot of songs in a very short span of time. So I think that just shows his caliber as a top guitar player. I think he probably still can't believe it's happening. [Laughs] So, yeah, we're very lucky and we're very happy that we found Richie. I think if we hadn't found Richie, we wouldn't be coming back to Italy; we would have had to cancel the tour and think about what to do next. But Richie is doing fantastically well, he's very excited about coming to all these different parts of the world and especially to come and play our own unique style of metal in Italy at the Milan show."

On whether JUDAS PRIEST will do any touring after the release of the band's next studio album:

Halford: "We've never followed the rules in PRIEST and we've always done what we wanted to do. We feel that it's important to make another great British metal-style classic album. So that's coming out next year. All the songwriting is completed. Me and Glenn [Tipton, guitar] wrote all the music. And we've got three tracks that are mixed and mastered and ready to go, so we're trying to figure out the best way to let them out to our fans. And we'll maybe play one or two of them live on this tour anyway, just to whet everybody's appetite and get everybody ready for the full release. So we've got a new record coming out, and that'll probably come out in the summer next year."

On whether he feels a sense of sadness knowing that the band may not be doing any more touring after the "Epitaph" tour:

Halford: "No, I don't think so. And we don't want the fans to feel sad; we want the fans to celebrate with us. I mean, everything comes to an end one way or another; that's just life. The great thing about PRIEST metal music is the metal music will live forever, and that's all that really matters to us in the band. Of course, the fans are the most important part of the life of PRIEST, so I think it's very important that all the Italian metalheads come to see this show. I'm sure at some point we would love to come back to Italy. It's just that there's some uncertainty now about a lot of things as far as the places that we will play and we may not return to. So it's very important that all of our fans come and see the show and have a great time and celebrate the life of PRIEST through the music together."

On whether he can see himself retiring from the music scene:

Halford: "Well, as a singer, you just have to face reality. You can sing forever, but the quality of your voice changes. And it's important for me to know that when I go on stage I can do the work I need to do and do my parts really well. As long as I can do that, I wanna keep doing it. I'm just being cautious. I don't know how long this voice is gonna last. But at the same time, I, personally, am not gonna say, 'By 2015, I' m gonna finish, I'm gonna stop,' because I don't think I can do that. It's not in my system. I love metal too much to say, 'By this time, I'm gonna stop doing the metal work.' One way or another, I think all of us in PRIEST will stay connected to metal; that's important for us all. . . We're just dealing with the physical situation as much as anything else. I mean, we're all in great shape. I think the feeling is 'Let's keep doing it while we're still able to do it as well it needs to be done.' And, as we said, this isn't goodbye; this is just farewell. This is another massive, massive, very intense world tour for PRIEST. We're just gonna slow things down a little bit now."

Judas Priest members comment on K.K. Downing's retirement

K.K. Downing released a statement earlier today blaming his departure from JUDAS PRIEST on "an ongoing breakdown in working relationship between myself, elements of the band, and the band's management for some time." He added that he "decided to step down rather than to tour with negative sentiments as I feel that this would be a deception to . . . our cherished fans."

Aniruddh "Andrew" Bansal of Metal Assaultconducted a short interview with JUDAS PRIEST drummer Scott Travis at the third annual Revolver Golden Gods Awards, which took place last night (Wednesday, April 20) at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles, California.

On whether he's as shocked as everyone else at original JUDAS PRIEST guitarist Kenneth "K.K." Downing's decision to leave the band:

Scott Travis: "Oh yes, I sure am. Everyone has been asking me about it, but then K.K. is a legend, so I do expect everyone to ask me about it."

On what this means for PRIEST to embark on a "farewell" tour:

Scott Travis: "I think we'll go as long as we want to go. It's up to everyone in the band. It's a five-member unit and I'm going to hopefully rock when PRIEST decides to give it up. I want to stick around and do what I can do. We're all lucky to do this to begin with. It's a gift to be able to make music, travel the world, meet fans and do everything else."

On what he plans to do after PRIEST's final tour:

Scott Travis: "I don't know, I'm just going to continue rocking my guts out like I do and hopefully something will come around the corner and I'll keep rocking."

Benjamin "Benji" Baudelot of Rock Hard, the leading monthly metal magazine in France, spoke to JUDAS PRIEST singer Rob Halford earlier today (Thursday, April 21), just one day after it was announced that the band's original guitarist, Kenneth "K.K." Downing, was retiring from the group.

"K.K. leaving was his own decision, for the reasons he made public on his web site [earlier today]," Halford said.

"We had a fantastic time together on the 'Nostradamus' tour... [But] K.K. has his own life to live and we can't force him to do anything he doesn't want to do.

"He told us [of his decision to leave JUDAS PRIEST] before Christmas time. Personally, I thought this could be the end... Emotionally, for me, it's been very, very difficult…

"When K.K. said he was thinking of retiring, Glenn [Tipton, PRIEST guitarist] was the first guy to send him a personal email to say, 'Ken, I hope you're OK. If there's anything you need, just let me know.' We kept the door open all this time in case Ken changed his mind, but the clock was ticking."

When asked about the remaining JUDAS PREST members' decision to go ahead with their previously announced tour plans with a replacement guitarist — 31 year-old British guitar player Richie Faulkner (LAUREN HARRIS, DIRTY DEEDS) — Halford said, "K.K. can never be replaced; he's unique, and we didn't want any kind of K.K. copycat. Richie Faulkner came to Glenn's house to jam, and Glenn simply told me he was absolutely brilliant."

Famed author Stephen King speaks on how Metallica, Anthrax and Judas Priest inspires him to write

According to Theatlantic.com, the May 2011 issue of The Atlantic features the short story Herman Wouk Is Still Alive, by Stephen King. James Parker, The Atlantic's entertainment columnist, talked to King about how the story came into being, about King's creative process, about the state of short fiction today, and about the relative merits of BLACK SABBATH and JUDAS PRIEST as background music to write to. They spoke on April 1.

Here are a few excerpts from the chat:

Theatlantic.com: Are you still listening to music when you write?

King: "I listen to music when I rewrite now. I don't listen to music when I compose anymore. I can't. I've lost the ability to multi-task that way!"

Theatlantic.com: You used to listen to METALLICA, right?

King: "Metallica, ANTHRAX, I still listen to those guys... There's a band called the LIVING THINGS that I like a lot. Very loud group. I never cared for Ozzy very much."

Theatlantic.com: I'm obsessed with BLACK SABBATH.

King: "No, no. They don't really work for me. 'I AM IRON MAN!'"

Theatlantic.com: That doesn't do it?

King: "No. JUDAS PRIEST, now…"

Theatlantic.com: I love Judas Priest.

King: "Did you ever hear their cover of 'Diamonds And Rust'?"

Theatlantic.com: Yes. I love it. Now: In your grand maturity...

King: "(laughs) I don't feel very mature."

Theatlantic.com: ...what is your favorite part of the creative process?

King: "It's still when you sit down and you get a really good day, and something happens that you don't expect and you just take off, you just go off on the material - I love that, when that happens."

So, who's signed on thus far? "Rob Halford, Glenn Hughes, Dave Grohl, Lemmy," she said, adding Grohl will do the Black Sabbath hit 'Mob Rules,' and Halford will be taking on 'Long Live Rock 'n' Roll.' And artists keep coming on. Judas Priest Guitarist K. K. Downing Dissects Classic Point Of Entry Song

Ville Krannila from guitarist K.K. Downing's Steel Mill website has dissected the classic track 'Desert Plains' with the legenday guitarist.

About the song Downing comments: "'Desert Plains' to me is just one of those songs that you can get into instantly because of the tempo and where the accents are in the riff. Additionally and particularly in the States the lyrical content making reference to the desert has that extra appeal for the fans in places like Arizona and New Mexico.

Having mentioned the tempo, it was often difficult for us to keep it as per the studio version live because it seemed to work virtually at any tempo. That's as long as it was faster of course, as is typical of bands when playing live. I guess it's because of that nervous energy and adrenalin that drives us that bit bit harder and faster when the lights go down.

'Desert Plains' was also a song that none of us really wanted to leave out of the set, and if we did it was only because we did not want fans to say that we kept on playing the same old songs. The song has that unique quality and feel about it and is hard to replace in the set.

It would be great to think that songs like this are easy to keep writing but believe me I have tried. So unless we come up with something soon there will be - and maybe quite rightfully - only one 'Desert Plains'."

Pantera frontman Philip Anselmo speaks out on Down touring in 2011, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne, and Rush Limbaugh

Philip Anselmo, Pantera/Down vocalist and gutiarists for Arson Anthem, was recently interviewed by CraveOnline.com and shared his opinion on a multitude of subjects. Here is a transcription of the interview highlights:

There's a hot-button issue that's been messing with my head that I'd like to get your thoughts on. In the wake of this Arizona shooting of Gabrielle Giffords and the killing of all those people, Rush Limbaugh went out and said that the shooter's insane, and it's clear because he listens to heavy metal, among other things.

If Rush Limbaugh said something about the idea that someone murdered someone or is crazy because they listen to heavy metal, that's a kneejerk reaction. And from me especially, because motherfucker I create heavy metal and I don't have a murderous fuckin' bone in my body. Nothing that's gonna fuckin' take me somewhere and take the coward's way out. He's out of his mind. I think that's about the most shallow view you could possibly take. I think you really need to take a look at what ignited some stupid motherfucker to do something like this.

Obviously it's a lot more than heavy metal. I don't know what the guy was listening to, but it wouldn't matter if he was listening to tapes of Osama Bin Laden preaching the goddamn jihad. Look at the guy first, don't look at the music. He's out of his fuckin' mind. Fuck Rush Limbaugh.

Looking through the history of damnation of heavy metal music or rock music in general, it falls in line with Marilyn Manson being blamed for Columbine and so many more incidents that preceded it...

Even before that it was kids committing suicide and it getting blamed on Judas Priest, and Ozzy Osbourne's been through this whole thing too. As a matter of fact, there's been some isolated Pantera fuckin' events where kids have done certain things and they were caught and they were wearing Pantera shirts. People were alarmed and what-not, but I mentioned Ozzy and Rob Halford from Judas Priest actually went to court and spoke in an extremely sane way - he took the stand on behalf of all of us, before any of us had been blamed. At least ten years before all that blame really took off. But Rob Halford almost singlehandedly enlightened the court system to the fact that you cannot tie insanity, murder or anything into music people listen to. So Rob Halford definitely deserves a pat on the back for that one.

It's being fabricated once again, but with people like that the entirety of the conversation is made to set fires.

I'd love to sit across from Rush Limbaugh and have him try to prove me crazy. I'm absolutely fucking craaaaazy, but I'm not stupid. You can love any kind of music and still use judgement, you stupid motherfucker.

Speaking of this year, fans have been eager for news on Down IV, but I hear there's not been a lot of time for that....

Yeah. Man, there will be a time for Down. Matter of fact we had a meeting this past week, and I know Jimmy's gotta go do an Eyehategod tour in February. But after that, I think we're looking to do some shows starting in March. Maybe local around here, maybe even some Mardi Gras gigs. But yeah, last week we sat around and they played me some new stuff they're working on, and it sounds good. Sounds like it's got a lot of promise, and really they just need me in the fuckin' practice room. So all this is going to happen this year. It has to happen. I know there's a responsibility here. Down has a fanbase and they are very very very loyal. So I don't want to let those people down. They deserve some new music, we have it. We've demoed other songs, there's songs that haven't even been released that people have never heard, so there's always Down there. For all you people out there, don't you stress. We got the Down coming.

Rocklahoma 2011 lack of rumors

While we can only confirm Drowning Pool for Rocklahoma 2011 so far, we have learned new information about the festival. The 2010 festival featured a line up consisting of more modern acts, such as Godsmack, Lacuna Coil, Buchcherry, Three Days Grace, Saving Able etc. We have learned that the 2011 line up will feature more retro hard rock acts. While we have only been able to confirm one band, here are a list of bands we think could be possibilites to be on Rocklahoma 2011:

ZZ Top (They were there last year and went over very well)
Judas Priest (last US tour so why not?)
Scorpions (See Judas Priest)
Warrant (New album coming out soon)
Steel Panther (See Warrant)
Poison (30th anniversary tour)
Rob Zombie (A suprise act that would go over well in my opinion)
Alice Cooper (No reason he shouldn't be a headliner)
Whitesnake (See Warrant)

We have not heard any of those bands as being rumored. Hell, we haven't heard of one rumored band to be honest with you. The bands mentioned above are possibilites that make sense.
