Dimebag Darrell Riffer Madness instructional guitar DVD to be released

Alfred Music Publishing, the world’s largest educational music publisher, releases Dimebag Darrell: Riffer Madness, an instructional DVD teaching the signature riffs and patterns of late guitar hero DIMEBAG DARRELL. As the founding member of PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN, Dimebag is recognized as one of the most influential guitarist in metal music.

Dime's good friend and protégé, metal maestro Nick Bowcott, helps pass Dime's torch to the next generation in this much-anticipated DVD. Nick takes 97 of Dime's critical riffs and patterns and uses them as a jumping-off point to help guitarists play their favorite guitar parts - and more importantly - understand the creativity, attitude, feeling, and intention underlying each pattern. Topics include: killer rhythm guitar, power grooves, pick squeals, psychotic syncopation, holes of silence, chromatics, diabolical dyads, and much more.

Picture-in-picture fret and pick action footage depict every performance nuance in a clear and player-friendly tutorial setting. The Dimebag Darrell: Riffer Madness DVD also includes a 28-page printable booklet with TAB of all 97 riff and pattern examples. Additional special features include: Two extensive “Lost Lessons” taught by Dime himself, an interview with Dime’s wife Rita Haney, a “Dime Tribute” performance featuring Nick Bowcott, and much more.

Dimebag Darrell: Riffer Madness DVD is now available for $24.99 at music retail stores and at this location. Also available is the Guitar World Presents Dimebag Darrell's Riffer Madness book and CD set, sold separately.

Recording of Pantera and White Zombie members song from 1992 found

Dimebag Darrell, Sean Yseult, and Phil Anselmo jamming at 6am after a long night of drinking on a White Zombie/Pantera tour, 1992. Recording is on Darrell's four-track in his hotel room. From Sean's archives where she dug up everything for her book, this has never been heard before!

Down to start recording new material today, May 11th, 2011

Legendary New Orleans, LA metal titans Down will enter the studio today, May 11th, to begin recording new music according to a message from guitarist Kirk WIndstein's official face book page:

"JUST GOT BACK FROM PHIL'S LAIR; THE NEW DOWN RECORDING BEGINS TOMORROW!!!!!!! KIRK"

New material may be released in 4 seperate EPs instead of the traditional album format. The band recently finihsed up a breif US tour with Pat Bruders handling bass guitar duties in place of Rex Brown. The status of Rex Brown as a member of Down is not known at this time.

Pantera/Kill Devil Hill bassist Rex Brown: "I'm not doing any Down"

Pantera bassist Rex Brown was recently interviewed by MetalAssault.com about his involvment with his new band Kill Devil Hill compared to his other projects:

"This is it. I’m not doing any Down. This is my devotion right here. There’s no side gigs, or anything else that’s going on. So this is what it’s going to be for the future."

The statement Rex made sounds certain however in a interview we posted earlier this week, guitarist Pepper Keenan was not sure what Rex's status was with Down. You can read that interview by clicking HERE. While no official word has been released about Rex Brown and his status in Down it is safe to say things are not looking good at this time.

Down just completed a short tour with Crowbar bassist Pat Bruder filling in on bass guitar.

Down guitarist Pepper Keenan speaks on the status Rex Brown and the bands future plans

A interview conducted with Down guitarist Pepper Keenan by the Delcotimes.com has answered some questions on bassist Rex Brown‘s absence from the bands recent spat of touring. When asked about Brown not touring with the band, Keenan had the following to offer:

“Rex is not gonna be with us. He’s got things he needs to deal with, and we gave him an ultimatum and he’s trying to work things out. We’ve got Pat (Bruders) from Crowbar playing bass, and he’s ass-kickin’ in the same way. He plays with his fingers — which is really cool; he’s got the whole Geezer Butler thing going on.”

When asked if Brown was still an active member of the band, Keenan merely offered:

“I don’t know what to really say on that; he’s not out of the band, but he’s not playing with us live.”

Pepper went on to reveal ideas the band is considering for a future studio release:

"We're kinda goin' backwards now. The first record came out a long time ago, so we're feeling that vibe and heading that way; real simple: stripped down and to the point.

"I think we're going to try and do four EPs, and they're all going to be connected together with artwork. This will allow us to have a frontload, heavy as [expletive] EP, and maybe the second one could showcase some of the acoustic stuff we've been saving for awhile, and then continuing the four of them with a completely different style, and obviously the fourth one would be another doom laden heavy one."

Down drummer talks about the bands setlist

Down drummer Jimmy Bower was interviewed by Examiner.com. Here are a few excerpts from the interview:

Q: So I cheated and looked at some of your setlists at the Texas shows, and I see that 'Jail' has disappeared. It’s always been one of my favorite parts of a Down show, those 5 minutes of calm in the middle of the storm. Any chance it could reappear for the New York or New Jersey fans?

A: "I don’t know, maybe."

Q: Who picks the setlists?

A: "Pretty much Phil (Anselmo). Phil writes it up, and everyone gets it, and if anyone has any special things they want to play that night... because we have so many songs to choose from, you know? 'Jail'... maybe to the fans we don’t know, but to us it’s kind of like a bummer? Not a bummer, but a real mellow part in the show, you know? I don’t know, when you’re jamming live you just want to be like “ahhhhhhhh!”"

Q: So you personally prefer to keep the live shows heavier?

A: "Lately, yeah. Lately Down has been about just being heavy, that’s what I love about Down. You never know. It just depends on how everybody’s feeling, and that’s what’s so cool, you just roll with it. Right now, we’re not really into the mellow songs, we’ve been doing a lot of the heavier stuff."

Vinny Appice explains how Rex Brown became bassist of Kill Devil Hill

This interview is courtesy of Bravewords.com

BraveWords.com: Is Kill Devil Hill a Vinny Appice solo project or is this a band?

Vinny Appice: “This is truly a band. I’m not in to doing solo projects. I’m a team player and I’d much rather be in a band than in the spotlight. Obviously, when Rex wasn’t involved in this band and it was just Dewey, Mark and myself; my name was more known, but I didn’t have a problem calling it a band. It’s a real band and now that Rex is involved everybody is a quarter of this band.”

BraveWords.com: How did you get Rex involved and what does he bring to the band?

Appice: "We had Jimmy Bain (ex-Dio, RAINBOW) with us at first and it didn’t work out. So, we tried a number of different bass players. Then one day, I was doing a drum-off at Guitar Center and Dimebag’s girlfriend was there and she said that Rex might be interested. She gave me the number and I gave Rex a call. He expressed interest in it, but at the time he was in his own band, ARMS OF THE SUN. He wanted me to play with them, so we had two bands and we didn’t know what to do with them. But in time in worked itself out and his main focus became Kill Devil Hill. As far as what he brings besides having a name and the legendary bands he’s been in – he’s just got the same attitude as we do and his sound and playing just fits perfectly. I knew it would. He’s the man for this band. His bass sound fits in flawlessly. When he committed to this and we started working together everything just came together. He put his bass on some of the tracks and they became magic.”

BraveWords.com: Is this the band that will take you into the future or is this a one-off project?

Appice: "I like longevity; just look at my career with obviously Dio and Black Sabbath. I’m loyal. I stay with drum companies a long time. When I believe in stuff, I stay with it. This is my dream. I’ve done a lot of stuff in my career and played with bands that people dreamed of playing with, but they weren’t my band. I loved doing it. I love learning from it. I loved playing with Sabbath. I loved playing with Dio and I couldn’t have played with anybody better or more legendary, but I never had my own band. Well, I did have my own band, AXIS, back in the ‘70s. I was twenty years old and then I got the call from Sabbath, so I went with Sabbath, but I never experienced what it would be like to have any level of success on my own and not having to rely on what was built before I got there. This is something we all look forward to carrying on as a career and a band.”

Pantera bassist Rex Brown talks about his new band Kill Devil Hill

Pantera/Down bassist Rex Brown was recently interviewed about his new band Kill Devil Hill by Bravewords.com. Here are a few excerpts from the interview:

BraveWords.com: How did you meet Vinny Appice?

Rex Brown: “We had been friends on the road. Down had opened up for Heaven & Hell all across Canada then we went to Australia with them and we just became good buds. Then, I got a call from him about this new band and he wanted to know if I’d be interested in coming down and playing on some tracks. Next door to me, I have a musician friend that has probably a half million dollars worth of gear in his house and so I played on some of these tracks and they were just blown away. I jammed with them after NAMM and I went down this week to see how it fit… how everyone got along. It turned out to be… SPECTACULAR! We got a lot of good work done. We have seven or eight songs in the can and there’s another eight sitting there. Vinny and I playing together is just nuts. It’s crazy.”

BraveWords.com: That’s one hell of a rhythm section.

Brown: "It is. It’s just nuts. We’re all systems go and we’ll get a record out this year.”

BraveWords.com: Is this simply a side-project for you or is this a band?

Brown: "I really think this is a long term deal. I really do. We fit together so good that it’s just going to work.”

BraveWords.com: Musically, what are we in for? Pantera was very aggressive and Dio was certainly more melodic…

Brown: "A lot of these things are Vinny’s drum beats that he just put down as a song and he expressed to Mark (Zavon, guitarist) how he wanted them done… I’d say if you take the elements of both bands and mash them together you have one powerful rhythm section and the rest of the songs have a little spice of maybe early ALICE IN CHAINS, but there’s a whole influence of LED ZEPPELIN… Throw that in the mix and you’ve got four pretty killer bands to choose from.”

Pantera manager: "There is never going to be a Pantera reunion show."

In response to an article posted by The Metal Den, Pantera managment have responded via Facebook and exclusively to www.VulgarDisplayOfBlog.com

From the official facebook of Pantera:

The Metal Den posted a story that claims someone from Vinnie Paul's camp is the source. The story is a complete fabrication. There are no plans for a Pantera reunion. Without Dimebag, there is no Pantera.

Kimberly Zide-Davis, manager of Pantera, exclusively messaged www.VulgarDisplayOfBlog.com about the Pantera reunion rumor:

"I have no idea where Metal Den gets their supposed info from. There is no truth to that story. There is never going to be a Pantera reunion show."

Mrs. Zide-Davis orchestrated communication between band members emailing her when the remastered Cowboys From Hell package was being
produced.

It seems obvious that communication between Vinnie Paul and Philip Anselmo is almost nonexistent. If Pantera decided to reunite Mrs. Zide-Davis would be the first to know.

Pantera to reunite for one show?

According to The Metal Den, a Pantera reunion for one show may be possible. The website is currently running a facebook page which wants fans to join if they are interested in the surviving members of Pantera reuniting for one show/series of shows.

Today the Metal Den posted the following: TMD has learned today from a source close to Vinnie Paul’s camp that: “If it does happen (the PANTERA reunion event), it will be for only one show.”

It should also be noted that Sodahead.com recently launched a poll asking fans whether or not they do indeed want to see Zakk Wylde play guest guitar for a Pantera reunion event. At this point, fans are 74% in favor of the idea.

Over the years fans have flooded forums, chat rooms, social networks and talked about who could attempt to fill Dimebag Darrell's shoes for a Pantera reunion tour. We here at www.VulgarDisplayOfBlog.com do not believe any guitarist is capable of pulling off Dimebag's guitar style, stage presence and charisma, but... fans still debate this. Who would you like to see fill in for Dimebag on a Pantera reunion show? Zakk Wylde? Kerry King from Slayer? Phil Demmel from Machine Head? Chris Broderick from Megadeth? John Petrucci from Dream Theater? Alexi Laiho from Children Of Bodom?

Pantera and Heaven & Hell members form Kill Devil Hill

Heaven & Hell drummer Vinny Appice has announced the addition of Pantera/Down bassist Rex Brown to the new band Kill Devil Hill.

Appice previously stated, “It’s a cool thing. This thing just kicks ass,” Appice said. “Unknown singer... his name is Dewey Bragg. And Mark Zavon on guitar. And Rex Brown from Pantera has played on some of the tracks.”

Kill Devil Hill’s guitarist, Mark Zavon, is known for his work with RATT, W.A.S.P. and 40 Cycle Hum. “It just kills,” Appice said. “So this will be out next year. We just hooked up management.”

The band currently has 10 demos recorded that are influenced by Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Alice In Chains.

Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine talks about the death of Dimebag Darrell encouraging him putting bad blood with Big 4 bands in the past

In a interview with Noise Creep, Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine spoke about how the death og legendary Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell encouraged him to put bad blood with members of the other Big 4 bands behind him. This was transcribed courtesy of Blabbermouth.net.

Noisecreep: Why is there only one "Big Four" U.S. show [featuring METALLICA, MEGADETH, SLAYER and ANTHRAX] confirmed?

Mustaine: That, I don't know. But I do know this — and it's not me speaking on behalf of any of the Big Four collectively or individually — it started off as one date before, and then it ended up being several. So I would say for people that pray, do so. For people that don't, start.

Noisecreep: It seems inevitable.

Mustaine: I think a lot of it was contingent on me, because [in the '80s and '90s] I was going through a lot of personal stuff that really put an unnecessary wall between all of us. A lot of it has been publicized, a lot of it wasn't. Most of it was the much heralded and worn stories of drugs and alcoholism. But there was also the other side — the black magic and witchcraft I had gotten into when I was a kid. Fortunately, I'm saved now so I don't have to deal with that. But God, man, I was going through so much turmoil from what I had done. And it it's just the consequences of poor choices. People would go, "Man, he has the worst luck in the world." No, not really. I had practiced black magic and was friends with Satan, so those things kind of happen when you make bad choices. And once I started looking at things differently — once [PANTERA guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott] had been murdered, unfortunately — it helped me put things in perspective between all of us in the "Big Four."

Noisecreep: It's fortunate that you have been able to put bad blood from the past behind you.

Mustaine: We had to, because back then before everyone started talking smack, we were kids. We were all friends, just little dudes. We were teenagers and fresh 20 year olds. And who would have thought we would have changed to the world, especially to the degree that we did? Our bands individually and collectively have appeared in tons of movies and television shows with our music, posters and T-shirts. Even the names of the bands turning up in the movies is a real thrill. In "Wayne's World", Dana Carvey asks Kim Basinger, "You got any MEGADETH?" That shows you've become more than a band, you've become an institution. And for us to be able to look back now and say, "Hey guys, can we just go back to being four bands that just love to play metal music and have fun? Let's not let all the pressures of life and being successful and being way older now interfere with the thing that binds us all together, which is our love for metal music."

Vinnie Paul speaks out on a possible Pantera reunion

Kerrang.com recently interviewed HellYeah/Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul. When asked about the possibility of Pantera reforming with a new guitarist, Vinnie responded with this:

"Dime was such a huge part of it that it would be just completely asinine to even consider that. He left an amazing legacy and it's going to be left untouched, it's beautiful, it's pristine and I want to leave it that way."

"I think it's pretty disrespectful from people to even suggest [reforming]," he added.

Dimebag was shot and killed on stage in Columbus, Ohio in December 2004 while performing with his and his brother's post Pantera outfit DamagePlan.

Pantera frontman Philip Anselmo speaks out on Down touring in 2011, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne, and Rush Limbaugh

Philip Anselmo, Pantera/Down vocalist and gutiarists for Arson Anthem, was recently interviewed by CraveOnline.com and shared his opinion on a multitude of subjects. Here is a transcription of the interview highlights:

There's a hot-button issue that's been messing with my head that I'd like to get your thoughts on. In the wake of this Arizona shooting of Gabrielle Giffords and the killing of all those people, Rush Limbaugh went out and said that the shooter's insane, and it's clear because he listens to heavy metal, among other things.

If Rush Limbaugh said something about the idea that someone murdered someone or is crazy because they listen to heavy metal, that's a kneejerk reaction. And from me especially, because motherfucker I create heavy metal and I don't have a murderous fuckin' bone in my body. Nothing that's gonna fuckin' take me somewhere and take the coward's way out. He's out of his mind. I think that's about the most shallow view you could possibly take. I think you really need to take a look at what ignited some stupid motherfucker to do something like this.

Obviously it's a lot more than heavy metal. I don't know what the guy was listening to, but it wouldn't matter if he was listening to tapes of Osama Bin Laden preaching the goddamn jihad. Look at the guy first, don't look at the music. He's out of his fuckin' mind. Fuck Rush Limbaugh.

Looking through the history of damnation of heavy metal music or rock music in general, it falls in line with Marilyn Manson being blamed for Columbine and so many more incidents that preceded it...

Even before that it was kids committing suicide and it getting blamed on Judas Priest, and Ozzy Osbourne's been through this whole thing too. As a matter of fact, there's been some isolated Pantera fuckin' events where kids have done certain things and they were caught and they were wearing Pantera shirts. People were alarmed and what-not, but I mentioned Ozzy and Rob Halford from Judas Priest actually went to court and spoke in an extremely sane way - he took the stand on behalf of all of us, before any of us had been blamed. At least ten years before all that blame really took off. But Rob Halford almost singlehandedly enlightened the court system to the fact that you cannot tie insanity, murder or anything into music people listen to. So Rob Halford definitely deserves a pat on the back for that one.

It's being fabricated once again, but with people like that the entirety of the conversation is made to set fires.

I'd love to sit across from Rush Limbaugh and have him try to prove me crazy. I'm absolutely fucking craaaaazy, but I'm not stupid. You can love any kind of music and still use judgement, you stupid motherfucker.

Speaking of this year, fans have been eager for news on Down IV, but I hear there's not been a lot of time for that....

Yeah. Man, there will be a time for Down. Matter of fact we had a meeting this past week, and I know Jimmy's gotta go do an Eyehategod tour in February. But after that, I think we're looking to do some shows starting in March. Maybe local around here, maybe even some Mardi Gras gigs. But yeah, last week we sat around and they played me some new stuff they're working on, and it sounds good. Sounds like it's got a lot of promise, and really they just need me in the fuckin' practice room. So all this is going to happen this year. It has to happen. I know there's a responsibility here. Down has a fanbase and they are very very very loyal. So I don't want to let those people down. They deserve some new music, we have it. We've demoed other songs, there's songs that haven't even been released that people have never heard, so there's always Down there. For all you people out there, don't you stress. We got the Down coming.
